teaching testimonials

"There is no question that Wendy is informed, responsible and excellent as a teacher of Alexander Technique. But even more incredible to me is Wendy's unique, intuitive sense of what needs to be addressed in each session, step by step. She is an extremely talented teacher with a vast amount of information and a wonderful sense of how to convey that information in the most effective way."

I have been privileged to be a client of Wendy Pickering over the last year. As a neurologist, and professor of neurology for Drexel University, I appreciate her informed insight and practice of the Alexander method. She introduced me to this unique method of acquiring spinal health, combining this discipline with a holistic approach to physical and mental health.  As a practitioner of traditional allopathic medicine, and as someone who has suffered from chronic and relapsing back pain, I have been able to incorporate what I have learned from Wendy into my general approach to personal health. For anyone seeking to complement their personal experience with yoga, self-directed or professionally managed exercise training, and improved health overall, I can strongly recommend working with Wendy to achieve personal health goals.

Wen Pickering has worked with me for about four years and the Alexander Method has helped with my posture, balance, and a nurturing feeling of well being, a lightness. I’m in my late 80’s and have played sports most of my life, then Pilates and yoga and Wen has showed me a whole new way of relieving stress, back pain, of alignment…I’m so grateful to her.

"I can’t really say enough about how effective Wendy is as a teacher. I think she has a real gift for communicating with others.  Her skill is comprised of life experience, a spiritual connection to herself and the universe as well as a curiosity and discipline that has lead her to pursue knowledge of how the body works physiologically as well as emotionally.  During her online workshop with my voice students from UMD, College Park, Wendy gave a brief presentation about Alexander technique and then lead the students through some basic awareness skills regarding the breath as well as exercises to strengthen awareness of the tongue, back of throat and neck.  These areas are particularly susceptible to tension when we sing. Wendy and I had several conversations in advance of this workshop to discuss which of the many Alexander technique concepts to highlight for singers of classical music as well as to best prepare for an online only version.  No small challenge. She was a joy to work with and the students have given me much positive feedback about the experience.  They are indeed curious for more time with her!"

Over the last year I’ve been working with Wendy.  She helped me put my previous knowledge and experiences as a nurse aside and experience being fully present in the moment.  It was like I walked into a room I’d never been in before.  My body feels like it’s “home”!  Everyone should know this experience!

The Alexander technique is about alignment—and it’s true that after I’ve spent some time with Wen, my body seems to discover an entirely new orientation in space;  one that feels buoyant and easy and free of pain.  But I also feel as if my mind changes. Our culture both commercializes and shames the body, especially the female body.  I go into the session feeling that my body is aging, overweight, possibly infected with some disease that I’ve read about in the papers.  But by the time I leave, I’m filled with a sense of wonder, strength and joy.  Wen’s reverence for the body, her vast and specific knowledge, her skill at communicating with touch and words, is a revelation.

"Wen is a fiercely perceptive and empathetic teacher.  I am a violist, and initially started work with Wen for help with performance-related issues.  Our work together has unlocked an ease and clarity in my body that has brought a quiet, profound happiness to all of my activity and work, not least of which is playing viola.  I am finding a comfort and fluency with the instrument that can sometimes feel like a dream."

Before studying Alexander Technique with Wendy Pickering, I frequently felt pain in my back. As a violist, this pain was severely exacerbated through long rehearsals and anxiety-ridden performances, sometimes becoming so intense that simple tasks like cooking and cleaning could only be executed in short bursts. This particular pain and discomfort led to my interest in studying with Wendy, though at the time I did not realize the extent to which this practice would impact my life. Through my work with Wendy I have discovered how to go about playing the viola with little to no pain or discomfort, and I have gained a greater understanding of my body, allowing me to perform both small and large tasks more effortlessly. Working with Wendy has also changed the way I approach things mentally and emotionally – she has helped me to learn how to find moments to pause and consider my intentions more thoughtfully. This allows me to avoid knee-jerk reactions to the situations and tasks I face. The Alexander Technique is a life-changing practice, and Wendy embodies its principles beautifully. I am profoundly grateful for her guidance.

To learn Alexander Technique with Wen has been an absolutely unforgettable and precious experience. Wen has led me to more deeply understand my body and my thoughts. I have had so many "wow" moments during lessons. I always look forward to our time together. Because of AT and Wen, I have started to become more aware of tension and to allow my body to release this. As a violinist, being able to avoid tension is one of the most important things when we play. I look forward to continuing to achieve greater freedom in playing the violin through our work together. Thank you so much, Wen!
